Pontoon Boat Buying Guide
Pontoons are a great option for family fun. These comfortable and spacious boats ensure a fantastic outing for everyone, from young children to young-at-heart grandparents. But with so many pontoons for sale, it can be tough knowing which one to get. We've created the following buying guide to help in your search. When you are ready to visit a pontoon dealer, head over to Loewer Powersports & Equipment. Our dealership is based in Alexandria, Louisiana. We also proudly serve those in Rapides Parish and Lafayette.
The Pontoons
The term “pontoon” refers to the cylinders that help the boat stay afloat. Think about what pontoon options would best match your needs.
The Number Of Pontoons
Two pontoons work well for cruising around smaller areas of water, fishing, and occasionally pulling kids on an inner tube. Three pontoons work well for more adventurous riding. The extra pontoon leads to better performance in rough waters and a higher horsepower rating.
The Size Of The Pontoons
Standard pontoons have a diameter of between 23 and 25 inches. This size works well for the average boater. Larger pontoons have a diameter of between 27 and 28 inches, which allow the boat to handle more weight, handle more passengers, and situates the boat higher on the water.
The Activities
Different uses of pontoons call for different features.
If you'll be fishing, look for:
- layouts that allow you to easily cast from different sides of the boat
- accessories such as a livewell and rod holders
- slip-resistant vinyl flooring instead of carpet
If you'll be towing watersports enthusiasts, seek out:
- high engine power so you can hit higher speeds
- the ability to create a good-sized wake
- room to store the watersports toys when they are not in use
If you'll be swimming, look for:
- sun loungers or swim decks
- improved ladders for easily getting in and out of the water
- slides to add extra fun
The Number Of Passengers
Think about how many people will be joining you on your pontoon rides. You don't want to overestimate your group size and end up paying for space you don't need. But you also don't want to underestimate your group size and end up cramped and uncomfortable.
In general:
- 1 to 5 passengers call for a pontoon that's 20' or less
- 6 to 10 passengers call for a pontoon that's 20' to 24'
- 10 or more passengers call for a pontoon that's 24' and bigger
The Seating Options
Pontoons can come with an impressive range of seating options. Models can include a rear sun lounge seat, swiveling bucket seats rather than fixed seats, seats that can be taken out to get more floor space, and so on. Think about how many seats you'll need and what seating style works best for your group.
The Ideal Horsepower
Consider the right amount of horsepower for your boating lifestyle. If you want to leisurely cruise around the lake, something in the 40HP range would work well. If you want a middle ground of speed potential, consider something around 150HP. If you want an adrenaline-fueled ride and plan on frequently towing watersports enthusiasts, start your search around 300HP.
The Price
Finally, think about how much you want to spend on your pontoon. The more often you'll use the pontoon and the longer you plan on using it, the more you will want to invest.
There are a few ways to lower the pontoon's price:
- buy during the off-season when pontoon dealerships offer great deals
- buy a new pontoon, but a model from previous years
- buy a used pontoon
