Your utility terrain vehicle provides you with rugged dependability for work hauling purposes and agile handling for recreational riding. You can clear debris from a construction site, mow your lawn, build a fence, or go mudding through a puddle-filled off-roading park. But whatever it is that you do, your UTV is going to get dirty and muddy over time. All that caked-on mud, leaves, grass, and other debris can clog up your engine and make it hard to repair your vehicle, in addition to making it unpleasant to ride in!

It’s wise to wash your UTV at least twice a year: once after removing it from storage in the spring and once before you put it back into storage for winter. We have provided our best tips to help you clean your utility vehicle, so read on to learn more!

Gather Your Supplies

First, take the time to park your UTV in an area with good drainage like a concrete or gravel driveway. Don’t clean your UTV on your lawn; the soap and debris could kill the grass or introduce weeds. Next, go and gather up all the supplies you’ll need to clean your vehicle. You don’t want to have to stop and go in the garage or house to find that scrub brush when you’re in the midst of cleaning. Some recommended supplies include:

  • A source of fresh water, like a garden hose or, if you have one, a pressure washer
  • Car-wash soap or a powersports-friendly cleaning solution
  • Degreaser
  • Sponges
  • Buckets for soapy water
  • Hard-bristle scrub brush
  • Chamois cloths to polish and dry
  • Plastic polish
  • Mud scraper

Pre-Soak and Scrape Off Mud

Take your hose and soak your UTV’s exterior, focusing on the muddiest parts. You’ll probably need to take your plastic mud scraper and scrape off as many big chunks of mud as possible. If you find oily spots that are hard to remove, spray them with a degreasing solution.

Lather Up & Scrub

Now that you’ve removed as much filth as possible, fill a bucket with soapy water get your sponge, and start scrubbing your UTV from top to bottom. Rinse as you go to keep soap residue from forming. Focus your attention on the wheels, the plastic, and the frame of the vehicle. You can use your hard-bristle brush to get into nooks and crannies.

Rinse and Dry

Rinse your UTV again thoroughly to remove all traces of soap, dirt, and oil. Your pressure washer can be of great use here, but your hose will do just fine. Take your chamois cloths and dry the vehicle or allow it to air-dry. If you have an air compressor, you can use it to speed up the process.
